GRAVITY SPORTS INTERNATIONAL GRAVITY SPORTS RACE SERIES RACE # 1 5/11/2002 |
Pictures below
The first in a series of 10 events being planned for this summer here in NH was held on Saturday May 11, 2002. Actually it started on May 10 with many riders coming out Friday afternoon to do some riding. The weather cooperated with 2 consecutive nice sunny days.
A good turnout with some new and experienced racers. A
total of 18 racers with 17 competing. The 18th was Kim who hurt her
hands on Friday and wasn’t able to race on Saturday.
There were 6 pro racers total with 1 racing only G-Bike and
1 who raced both G-Bike and Luge and Buttboard. The other 4 raced luge and/or
Buttboard.
There was 1 10 year old junior racer who rode Buttboard. 9
Rookie racers with 2 advancing to race the Amateur division also. That made a
total of 3 amateur racers.
I was told that some of the closest racing all day was the rookie class with all of them showing excellent skills throughout the day.
This class will be eligible to race amateur after
completing 1 more rookie race in their next event. I look forward to seeing some
very close racing from this group throughout the series.
As an event organizer there is 1 major concern that looms over the whole weekend. Will we make it with out any serious injuries? There is no more of a sinking feeling then when you hear the words “ rider down” over the radio. It is those few moments that pass until further word comes across of their condition which make the waiting very agonizing.
Unfortunately we had one of those moments this weekend. Being the last to arrive at the scene I witnessed something that comforted me. Everyone and I mean everyone who was there pitched in to comfort and aid those who were injured. The scene was one of calm and caring. I knew then that I was with the people I wanted to be around. Once the scene was clear we had a meeting to discuss whether to continue or not. There was no dissension as everyone said the show must go on. And with that everyone took their places and we finished racing. I can’t explain the pride I felt when this group of people who just moments ago witnessed what could happen to anyone of them decided to finish what they had started.
As bad as I feel for those who were injured, it is some
consolation to know that the injuries were not the result of a dangerous course.
Or dangerous riding. Quite the opposite. It happened because of close racing.
During the riders meeting that morning I said to the riders that as racers we
accept possible injury as part of what we do. And that if it is going to happen
let it be because of close racing. Not stupid riding. There is no doubt in
anyone’s mind these guys and gals were racing hard. Not riding stupid.
My best wishes to Kim, Bob and Pete for a speedy and full
recovery. Your attitudes exemplify professional.
I have said it many times about this course. It is not the
fastest. Not the longest. Not the most technical. But it does offer a little of
everything. Which equals good close racing.
There is one other thing I wanted to mention. Putting on events from start to finish is a huge undertaking. It all came together this weekend not because of anything I did alone. But because of everything everyone did together. I personally want to thank everyone who made this work. You are the reason we had a successful event.
My wife Brenda and kids Kyle, Mackenzie and Ashleigh.
The best support team a guy can ask for. Also Sean, Kim, Neil, Jim and
Bob whom I relied on heavily for input to make the best decisions.
My corner workers Chris, and his friend (I apologize I know
you told me your name 2 times) and Duane.
The Red Bull Crew. Thanks for your support. It is VERY
appreciated. Thanks for giving me a chance Jeff.
The riders for helping with the course. Because of your
input I feel we are continuing to make this a safe place to push the envelope.
The Mayor and his wife for coming out to see first hand
what it is we do. Your suggestions and input are always welcome and appreciated.
Kirk and his family for allowing us to impose on them for
our parking needs.
Our EMT’s. Their true professionalism in a crisis is
something I hope we don’t have to call on to many times. But when we do rest
assured you are in the best hands. We witnessed it this weekend.
GSI photographer for this weekend Nicole Malone. Thanks to you we have pictures to help
us remember. You available again?
And anyone else I may have forgotten.
The goal of GSI when I set out to do this was to bring quality racing here to the North East.
Because of every person who helped, raced or participated in any manner I feel we did just that. With lots more to come!
Looking forward to a great season.
Thanks
Tim Cayer
