And we're off! With the 2003 season that is. And off to great start! Front Royal was organized and hosted by Blue Smoke Racing and Dr. No Racing. Bob Swartz, Neil Orta and Kim Trader did an awesome job at running a fun, safe and challenging event. A great big THANK YOU to these three for their hard work. A big thanks also to the 4-H organization for letting us use their road and first class facility. Complete with indoor pits and rest rooms.

The event went off without a hitch. Things ran on time and everyone got plenty of ride time. I think it was 9 practice runs and countless more heat races. There was 1 Junior buttboarder, a good size group of rookies, am's and Pro's racing in luge, buttboard, stand up and gravity bike. A total of 26 (someone correct me if I am wrong) which includes the first ever Standup group to come to a GSI event. We had 3 west coast racers. Stand up racers from Canada and the Washington DC area. And the balance of racers from PA, VA and the surrounding area. 

There was lots of action from start to finish and particularly at the last left before the finish line. The course offered everyone a  little bit of everything and ran almost like 2 races in one. The first half of the course was very important. It required a clean start and a smooth run. This is because at about the halfway point the road actually went slightly uphill for a short distance. If the pack got away from you here, making it up at the bottom was going to be tough. Then if you managed to stay with the pack it all came down to the last hard left. 

The weather was very mixed offering some sun, clouds, drizzle, hail, and a bit of snow at one point. But the course never really got to wet. And the sun broke out near the end. Just as the awards ceremony got under way the snow started to really come down.

The awards were nice and original. Sponsored by ABEC11. There were also some bearings donated by Predator Bearings and prize money for the Pro luge class offered by landluge.com which paid back to 5th place.

All in all a great start for the second season of the Gravity Sports Race Series for GSI.

A special thank you to the volunteers who spent the day helping things run smoothly. I don't have all your names but you know who you are. Without your help this event would have not happened as smoothly as it did. THANK YOU EVERYONE!
